Francesco A. Castano
Many who pursue muscle building or fat loss feel that joining a local gym is a prerequisite, and so, following a rather calorie friendly December, thousands crowd the lobbies of local gyms, signing up for a multi-year membership, believing that they've just made the initial leap towards a bodybuilding or fat loss transformation. But if we analyze the number of people who actually continue attending the gym after their initial contract signing, we find that the once motivated fitness enthusiast fueled with zeal for substantial change suddenly fails to walk through the gym's front door as February approaches.
Many believe that sloth is the natural enemy that interferes with pursuing a pattern of muscle building or fat loss consistency, and never consider whether in fact the gym environment itself may sap motivation for many, eventually causing most to quit the pursuit of muscle building or fat loss completely.
Yet, how could this be? Is it possible for the gym to reduce motivation, when in fact such an environment should be conducive towards achieving results? The answer will be found within the first few workouts, and clearly becomes one of the primary reasons why most lose their acceptance of regular gym attendance long before producing significant results.
Let's pretend that you are prepared for an intense weight lifting workout session, and you encounter one or more friends who decide to train at the same time as you. What will probably happen next? Will they experience the best weight training and cardiovascular workout session of the year, or will the next two hours focus upon discussing yesterday's episode of the Biggest Loser? Let's instead assume you attend the gym and happen not to locate any acquaintances, but as you scan the territory, immediately sense that every machine you are planning to use is occupied, with a very lengthy wait for each. Do you believe that this will lead to a productive weight lifting workout session, or encourage a trip to the neighborhood drive thru to try and munch the bitterness away?
Oh, and let's not neglect the most many additional excuses to skip the scheduled workout for a day, such as bad weather (two feet of snow might make navigating the freeway inconvenient), car breakdown (a flat tire always offers justification to take a nap), and traffic jams (couldn't be late for a date with the TV)! Some may say that these unexpected circumstances cannot occur regularly, but once consistency is hampered, and a workout is missed, the mind becomes far more accepting of the next skipped bodybuilding workout session, and this attitude will eventually lead to another habit, one which is much more enjoyable; couch warming, without the distraction of a gym visit for your bodybuilding workout session.
So, what is the alternative? I perform my weight lifting at home, having built over 60 pounds of muscle and lost 50 pounds of body fat, without a gym membership, proving that neither fat loss nor muscle gains requires waiting in line for machines or paying expensive bodybuilding gym fees. In fact, my muscle gain and fat loss success was achieved in my basement, with standard weight training equipment, and I was able to produce far more consistency with my bodybuilding workout routine than most who must contend with the often frustrating gym environment, specifically because I am in control of my surroundings, and can remove distractions that obstruct my ability to perform my bodybuilding workout.
This is not to say that achieving a bodybuilding caliber physique or producing consistent fat loss is impossible through gym training, as many with such memberships produce excellent results, but for those who have the option to buy some basic weight training equipment, I believe doing so is extremely convenient, offers no distractions, and is far less expensive over an extended time frame than joining a local gym. Achieving success in muscle building or weight loss is in great part due to mental focus, a factor which suffers greatly when subjected to an unpredictable group of circumstances, and this is why I have constantly trained at home, and achieved very impressive muscle gains and fat loss results specifically because I have constantly been able to move forward with my bodybuilding workout sessions in a methodical fashion.
Don't frown upon performing your weight lifting workouts at home until you've experienced the inconveniences of attending a gym, but if you decide to sign up for a local gym facility, make sure not to sign a long term deal until you have regularly trained for at least two months and have proven to yourself that the inconveniences and obstacles will not interfere with remaining faithful to your weight lifting workout.
